Quick answer

Airlines can ask for a fit to fly letter if you have been ill, had an operation or injury, or are pregnant (many airlines ask for one from around week 28). I am a GP registered in Almería and I issue it in English after examining you at home or in your hotel in Almería, Roquetas de Mar, Aguadulce, El Ejido, Vícar or Níjar. Always check your airline's own rules first: each one sets what the letter must say and how recent it must be.

When you may need one

  • You have had a recent operation, an injury or a plaster cast.
  • You have been ill during your holiday (for example a chest infection) and the airline or your insurer asks whether you can fly.
  • You have a long-term condition (heart or lung disease) or need oxygen or special assistance.
  • You are pregnant and past the week your airline sets.

What the letter includes

Your details, the date of the examination, the relevant findings and a clear statement on whether you are fit to travel by air, with any precautions. I write it in English (or in English and Spanish) and sign it with my registration number. If your airline has its own form (sometimes called a MEDIF), bring it and I fill it in.

Pregnancy

Many airlines ask for a letter from around week 28 confirming the due date and that the pregnancy is uncomplicated, and do not accept passengers after a certain week. Rules change between airlines, so check yours before booking the visit.

How to get it in Almería

  1. Message me on WhatsApp with your flight date, airline and the reason.
  2. I come to your home or hotel and examine you.
  3. If you are fit to fly, you get the signed letter during the visit.

The fitness check needs an examination, so it cannot be done only by video. If you need a report for your travel insurance as well, read home and hotel visits in English.

When I cannot sign it

If the examination shows that flying is not safe yet, I will explain why and what needs to happen first. I never sign a fit to fly letter without seeing you.
