Medical certificate in Almería, Spain: who asks for one and how to get it

Doctor signing an official medical certificate
Quick answer

In Spain a medical certificate (certificado médico oficial) is signed by a registered doctor after examining you. It is often required by gyms, sports clubs and federations, races, diving schools, summer camps and Spanish public job exams, and by some consulate visas. Driving and gun licences are different: they are issued only at an authorised Centro de Reconocimiento. I issue certificates in Spanish or English in Almería and nearby towns.

What a Spanish medical certificate is

It is a document signed by a doctor registered with a Spanish medical college that states your health for a specific purpose. It includes your name and passport or NIE number, the wording the organisation asks for, the doctor's name, registration number (número de colegiado), signature and date.

Some organisations require the official printed form of the Spanish General Council of Medical Colleges (sold in tobacconists, estancos); others accept a signed report or their own form. Check what they ask for before booking.

Who asks for one

  • Gyms, sports clubs and federation licences: football, cycling, triathlon, martial arts, padel tournaments…
  • Running races, trail and endurance events.
  • Diving courses: if you answer "yes" to any question on the diver medical questionnaire, a doctor must assess you and sign it.
  • Summer camps, schools and after-school activities for children.
  • Spanish public job exams (oposiciones), before the physical tests or when you start the job.
  • Studying, volunteering or working abroad: some universities and employers ask for a certificate of good health.

Visas and adoption

Spanish residence visas applied for at a consulate require a certificate under the International Health Regulations (2005). Since Spanish criterion DGGM 5/2025 it is no longer required for applications filed from within Spain. Ask your consulate whether the certificate must be issued in your country of residence. Adoption suitability assessments also usually ask for a health certificate for each applicant.

What a GP cannot sign

A standard medical certificate is not valid for a Spanish driving licence, a gun licence, a private security licence or a recreational boating licence. These are issued only at an authorised Centro de Reconocimiento (CRC). I tell you this before the appointment so you do not pay for something that will not be accepted.

How to get one with me

  1. Message me on WhatsApp in English: tell me who is asking for the certificate and your deadline.
  2. Send me a photo of the form or requirement, if you have one.
  3. I give you an appointment in Almería or at your home in Almería city, Roquetas de Mar, Aguadulce, El Ejido, Vícar, Níjar and nearby areas.
  4. I examine you and hand you the signed certificate with my registration number.

A fitness certificate needs an in-person examination. If you are ill on holiday and need a report for your insurer, read English-speaking doctor in Almería: home and hotel visits.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a medical certificate in English in Almería?

Yes. I see patients in English and can write the certificate in English, or in Spanish if the Spanish organisation requires it.

Can a medical certificate be issued online?

Not for physical fitness: the doctor needs to examine you in person. An online consultation can help you check which document you need.

Where do I get the medical test for a Spanish driving licence?

At an authorised Centro de Reconocimiento de Conductores (CRC). A standard medical certificate is not accepted for driving licences.

How long is a medical certificate valid?

Each organisation sets its own limit. Public job exams often require a recent date. Check the requirements before booking.
